Nothing Prettier Than A Smile

...and the girls have it.

OK, OK, there are a few pretty boys that have a really nice smile, but mostly guys have captivating grins, the kind that melts the hearts of the girls, but this hubpage is not to be about the grins of guys.

There is something so natural about the female smile, its beauty is like a sparkling waterfall, a shimmering lake, an all-colors sunset, the phosphorescent wake following a ship at night, a full moon at midnight, the list goes on. I’ve shared these things with a woman; it’s better when sharing, to see that beautiful natural phenomena with the pretty feminine smile right beside it. Even if right then she isn’t smiling, if she’s just enjoying the moment with you, but to look upon her face, to see the charm that’s always there and to know that smile is just beneath the surface, ready to enthrall you in the next second.

All women have this natural ability, from tiny babies to the oldest woman on earth. OK, Mother Teresa wasn’t the oldest woman on earth, but I never saw a photo of her where she didn’t have her smile on. But her smile was more her natural facial expression, one of warmth and goodness, so it could easily be called her smile.

And tiny babies: Some have decided those smiles on the very smallest of them to be problems of gas. Maybe with the boy babies…boys stay gassy right into old age, and they quite often think it’s funny, even charming—a fart? Charming? I don’t think so. Back to the girl babies. I’ve recently had the wonderful opportunity to hold a girl baby of the tender age of only six weeks, and she had many different expressions. Maybe they weren’t eyes-shining, mouth-open, break-your-heart, joyous smiles; maybe just that she made unmistakable eye-contact with me when I held her head in one hand and her bottle with the other; that pleased look in her eyes that she was taking care of that hunger feeling in her stomach…so pleased-looking that I was certain she was smiling.

And so, in my mind, she was.

But there are some women who don’t use their smile. Hopefully only a few. I’ve known just one. I’ve seen her smile just once—yes, it was a charmer, but didn’t last long. What was the occasion? I don’t remember, and I hope that one smile didn’t damage her face.

Then there are the women who smile continuously. No, I don’t mean the eyes-shining, mouth-open, kind, but the face and eyes always show happiness, buoyancy, playfulness, waiting for the next gleeful event to come along. Her face is always ready to break out in that dazzling smile. I have a great-niece who wears this kind of smile; she has worn it from infancy and I know she will carry it right into old age. May her everlasting smile affect others as it has me.

I agree and it's lovely that you appreciate such a gesture. There's nothing more attractive/pleasant than a captivating smile which emphasises the warmth and true character of a person.

I enjoy reading your romanticised writing and you're right - the smile has it all!

Thank you so much, Textured Ideas "Natalie". I "like" romance, I always have, and I do try to add it into my writing whenever I can, and you are right: I too believe a smile emphasises the warmth and especially the true character of a person. I've seen many beautiful but insincere smiles, but the insincerity destroys the beauty. Thanks again.

Nicely and romantically written SubRon. Smiling comes naturally to many people and to others it needs some practice. My family was from a stoic stock who smiled only if there was good reason. So when I took a job that required smiling up to fourteen hours a day I had some adjustments to make. Smiling lifts the heart and relieves tension. Few things are more beautiful than a genuine smile that carries into the eyes.

Thank you, Peg, and I liked your personal family story too. I don't quite understand why smiling would take practise, but I guess so. I remember in the original "Planet of the Apes" when Charlton Heston was trying to teach...and I can't think of her name. Anyway, when that poor girl finally smiled--OMG! I say that because smiling probably came so natural to her in her real life, so she had to fake "learning" to smile. As projectionist I showed tha movie 16 times back in the 60's, then bought it and have watched it umpteen times more, so it's surprising I can't think of that girl's name. Thanks for the kind comment.
